What’s the fuss about?
LinkedIn, ‘Facebook for business people’, changed their terms of use to allow them to use your photo and name in third-party advertising.
It’s easy to see why LinkedIn would want to do this, as it appears as if you are endorsing the advert. However, therein lies the problem, as it could appear that you are endorsing the product.
LinkedIn have introduced this feature with the ability for you to switch it off – and that’s what has caused the furore, because the default is for you to be opted-in. There is even a view that LinkedIn may have broken Dutch privacy law and European Data Protection laws by changing these privacy settings.
How do I opt out of this ‘feature’?
- In your web browser, go to https://www.linkedin.com
- Log-in using your e-mail address and password.
- In the top right-hand corner of the screen, move your mouse over your name and ‘Settings’ will appear. Click on ‘Settings’.
- On the ‘Settings’ page, click on the ‘Account’ tab (near the button left-hand side of the screen).
- Under the ‘Privacy controls’ heading, click on ‘Manage social advertising”.
- Un-tick the check-box that says ‘LinkedIn may use my name, photo in social advertising’.
That’s it !
